EDIT: Given SEGA’s track record of delisting their mobile games that have been discontinued, I would recommend folks to go ahead and add/install these 2013 Retro Engine remasters onto their Apple App Store / Google Play Store accounts and compatible mobile devices ASAP rather than waiting too long … even if the Android versions have NOT YET received the updates that implement removal of ads and IAPs that the iOS versions have received.

That way, even if the titles do get delisted in the future, they will remain associated and linked to your Apple App Store / Google Play Store accounts, similar to how Steam games (when purchased/redeemed prior to their delisting) should remain in your Steam account library for future install/play.

As per Tails’ Channel social media posts (Instagram / Facebook) that broke the following news:

Breaking: The 2013 Retro Engine remasters of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 have been updated with End of Service messages, signaling the discontinuation of SEGA’s support for the games on mobile platforms. Leaderboards have been removed, alongside multiplayer for Sonic 2.

The two games are the latest discontinuations of service among the mobile Sonic the Hedgehog library, following the similar delisting of Sonic CD and Sonic 4 episodes I & II in May 2025.

Upon further checking, the iOS (Apple App Store) versions of Sonic the Hedgehog Classic and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Classic have both been very recently updated within the past 24 hours (version 5.0.3 and version 6.0.3 respectively).

This means that anyone with an Apple App Store account that has added and installed either or both of the above recently updated games on their compatible iOS devices, should now be able to enjoy them completely free of ads and in-app purchases.

NOTE: However, at time of writing up this post, the Android (Google Play Store) versions have NOT YET received any updates since October 2025. Hopefully the Android versions will also get similary updated in the near future … if/when that happens, I will update this post.
