[TD Direct Investing] PSA: TD Direct Investing Commission-Free Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) – Specific Menu of 100 ETFs

TD Direct Investing has finally joined the Canadian broker commission-free ETF space, even if limited, in 2025. Like other Big 5 banks, they use a select menu of ETFs rather than offering all ETFs commission-free like Questrade, Wealthsimple, Desjardins Online Brokerage (Disnat), and National Bank Direct Brokerage (NBDB) – the latter 3 having no commissions at all! Only CIBC Investor’s Edge remains without any of these benefits.

Back to TD Direct Investing’s new perk:

NYSE notables:
VOO (S&P500 at 0.03% MER (VFV for us)),
SPY (S&P500),
QQQ (NASDAQ),
GLD (Gold),
TLT (Long-Term Treasuries),
VTI (US Total Stock Market 0.03% MER, VUN on TSX 0.17%),
VB (Vanguard US Small Cap),
VNQ (US REIT Index) – interesting they didn’t include VRE on the TSX

TSX notables (what most are advised to use by credible finance personalities (Ben Felix, Justin Bender, Dan Bortolotti – all fiduciaries with CFA/CFP credentials with YouTube channels): https://canadiancouchpotato.com/model-portfolios/)
TEQT/VEQT (pure global stocks with 20-30% weight Canada),
TGRO/VGRO (Growth – 80% global stocks/20% bonds),
TBAL/VBAL (Balanced – 60% global stocks/40% bonds),
VCNS (Conservative – 40% global stocks/60% bonds)
+ more, there are 100 ETFs total…

Another PSA, if you’re investing in a fund or ETFs without a specific strategy, check your % MER (fee paid per year as a percentage of invested assets). People always fail to do this and it ends up gobbling a huge chunk of their retirement – see picture below. Don’t get scammed, legally, of course…

Also, you can combine this perk with this 2% deposit deal:

Invest $10K – 250K get 2% bonus (TFSA, RRSP, FHSA, LIRA, LRSP) (New/Existing accounts)

I’ve had all these brokers at some point except CIBC Investor’s Edge…

Also, you can use TDDI for savings interest using their investment savings account (free to buy/sell):

Just watch for quarterly maintenance fees if your account is small.
