Warning to anyone considering it: make sure to check that the applications you want will run on this machine, the processor is ARM64, it’s still relatively recent technology, not everything will work like on regular x86 Intel or AMD processors. Google Windowsonarm for an exhaustive list or applications and whether they work natively or not. Windows has built a “translator” of sorts, that will emulate x86 for applications which aren’t natively supported. It works well, I have not had issues installing a few apps that aren’t made for ARM64.
With that out of the way, I’m quite happy with it, a few random thoughts:
– The screen is drop-dead gorgeous, I can’t get used to how beautiful it looks, had a lot of fun watching movies and series on this thing, even looking at a 4K wallpaper is quite the experience. The 120Hz refresh rate makes it even prettier. I’ve never had an OLED screen, so you might not be as impressed as me depending on where you come from, but I love it.
– The design is gorgeous, just beautiful overall. The keyboard is very satisfying to type on, I like the backlight and the sound it makes, but beware it can be hard to see the letters under certain conditions. The touchpad is alright, it’s not amazing, but that’s not unusual on most laptops that aren’t Macbooks.
– The speakers are average, I don’t like them very much. It doesn’t matter to me as I use headphones, but if that’s something you care about, keep it in mind, they get a little tinny when the volume is high.
– It’s very snappy and responsive, a pleasure to use so far. Browsing the web, productivity tasks, Office work, etc. is instantaneous.
– Battery life is great, compared to laptops with the usual x86 processors. It’s crazy to me that I can see it reach 10% and know I have plenty of time to finish up my work, without needing to rush to grab the charger. It’s a way different from the usual Windows laptop experience when it comes to battery life. Obviously it depends on what you’re doing, I’ve had it last the whole day, but I’ve had it last about 6 hours with heavier loads, still very good.
– This and all ARM64 laptops do NOT play games! I personally don’t game, so I don’t care, but if you want to play games, stay clear, it will play some games, and maybe will play more as more developers work on compatibility, but right now, it’s terrible for gaming even if the processor is good on paper.
– Last note, as this is not shown anywhere on the Amazon page, this is the Snapdragon Elite X1P-42-100, it’s the most budget version. It’s not that far from the highest tears in terms of raw processing power, not as much as you’d think, but the GPU is much worse. For my usage, I don’t notice any difference, it feels fast. If you need a good GPU, this isn’t what you want.
That’s pretty much it so far, no regrets, my only advice is do your research, and be specific about exactly WHAT YOU NEED vs what this computer CAN ACTUALLY DO. If you do that, and it fits your criteria, you won’t regret it.
