Doodle Kingdom: Medieval is a fantasy-inspired puzzle game that turns players into magicians and knights who create, defend (or destroy!) their own magical kingdoms where they can also raise dragons.

The playful premise from the developers at JoyBits goes like this: God created the world, and people messed it up with their deadly technology. So He decided to start over. Only this time, the new world would be filled with magic and sorcery. That’s where you come in!

There are several ways to play Doodle Kingdom: Medieval, starting with matching elements in the game’s Genesis mode. It’s fundamentally about experimentation as you pick two elements and attempt to combine them to create something new. The act of creation follows a certain kind of magical logic, and the more you try, the more sense it makes. For example, combine the elements Sky and Beast, and you’ll create Birds. Combine the elements Human and Magic, and you’ll create a Magician. There are more than 100 elements to create and discover.

After you successfully combine elements, Doodle Kingdom: Medieval treats you with a relevant, often funny quote. Say you combine a Human and an Orc to create a questionable new discovery. Doodle Kingdom: Medieval might invoke Charles Dickens, who famously wrote in Martin Chuzzlewit, “He would make a lovely corpse.”

The more you discover through this playful experimentation, the more you can play. Doodle Kingdom: Medieval‘s Quests mode allows you to take on a medieval fantasy role as you unlock certain elements. In “Return of the King,” you play as a knight who must help a prince return his crumbling kingdom to its former glory. But before you do that, you’ll have to figure out how to create the castle element. In “The Necromancer’s Uprising” quest, you become a warlock — a “dark mage” who aims to conquer the world, provided you combine elements and find a specific book first. Unlock the “How to Train Your Dragon Quest” to become a dragon breeder, and it’s your job to breed and raise four different kinds of dragons.

Doodle Kingdom: Medieval also includes a game mode inspired by the endless runner genre. In it, your character not only runs but engages in medieval combat, and it’s your job to heal and protect them along the way with magical potions that replenish their health and energy. Between runs, you can upgrade your hero’s abilities, like strength and defense.

I needed to drill some holes into my concrete ceiling to hang some curtains and my regular drill did not have a hammer function, so I started shopping for a hammer drill. I look at renting one from Home Depot, but that was already 42 bucks plus tax and I saw this one at Canadian Tire for 60 at 50% off and was sold.

It was taking me 30 minutes just to drill one hole with the regular drill and took me two minutes with the hammer drill.

Out There from developer Mi-Clos Studio blends elements of science fiction, roguelikes, and resource management tied together with beautiful pulp comic book styling.

Out There begins with a classic hard sci-fi premise. In the far future, Earth’s resources have been depleted. You play as an astronaut sent on a mission to find more resources. After some serious cryonic sleep, you were supposed to wake up orbiting Jupiter’s moon Ganymede. Instead, you awake confused, in unknown space, and so far from home that you’re not even in the right solar system.

Your goal: Survive … out there.

That requires exploration, resource management, and a bit of diplomacy. There are planets to visit (the green ones have much-needed oxygen), resources to harvest (you need to power your adventures), and multiple alien species to meet (and languages to learn). Because Out There takes place in a procedurally generated galaxy, every game is different, and every unique version of the galaxy is begging to be explored.

Out There’s atmospheric, other-worldly soundtrack accompanies players throughout their adventures, courtesy of composer Siddhartha Barnhoorn, whose audio stylings you may have heard in games like The Stanley Parable.

Evoland 2 is a time-bending, genre-mashing role-playing game from developers Shiro Games and Playdigious that’s really many games from many eras tucked into one self-aware adventure.

Players take on the role of an amnesiac protagonist-turned-hero who’s caught a slight case of spacetime continuum disorder. Your explorations through the world help you solve the mystery of your origins and change the game around you — ideally, but not necessarily for the better.

That’s the big twist: As you make your way through different time periods in Evoland 2, the world transforms. Though it’s an RPG at heart, it morphs seamlessly between varied genres and nostalgic aesthetics.

Sometimes, it looks and feels like you’re playing on a Game Boy. Other times, it’s clearly a game from the NES or PSOne era. Sometimes, you’re exploring a town in 2D, like it’s an early Legend of Zelda game. Sometimes, it‘s a 3D world like Final Fantasy. Sometimes you’re exploring, sometimes you’re platforming, and then you’re solving tile-matching puzzles, and before you know it, you’re in a fighting game.

Evoland 2 is an ode to video games and platforms gone by and a loving wtribute to its influences. And you can experience and discover it all for free.
