Here’s how I got the price down:
1. AliExpress 11.11 Sale & Coupons
AliExpress is offering substantial discounts during its 11.11 sale. Make sure you check for additional coupons on the product page, usually displayed just below the item price. You may need to click and claim them before checkout.
Important: Set your AliExpress currency to USD. AliExpress has pretty terrible exchange rates, and switching from CAD to USD can save you around $30. Compare both currencies before purchasing to see the difference.
2. Rakuten Cashback
Use “Rakuten.com” (https://www.rakuten.com/) (make sure you’re using “.com”, NOT the Canadian “.ca” site).
– Currently offering 25% cashback.
– Cashback increases to 30% on November 7th.
– I decided not to wait until November 7th because I didn’t want to risk the CPU price going up.
3. PayPal Discount
Paying with PayPal gets you another $28 in savings.
– Select Pay Now, rather than installments.
– Make sure PayPal charges you in USD, even if you’re paying with a Canadian credit card.
– Avoid PayPal’s currency conversion because its exchange rate is also terrible.
4. Use a No-Foreign-Transaction-Fee Credit Card
Ideally, use a credit card that doesn’t charge foreign currency conversion fees.
Most Canadian credit cards charge an additional 2.5% foreign transaction fee. I use the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite to avoid this extra cost.
A Few Rakuten Tips
To help ensure your cashback tracks properly:
1. Open a new incognito tab on pc.
2. Go to Rakuten.com (USA Rakuten, not .ca) and click through to AliExpress.
3. Try to complete your purchase immediately after clicking through.
4. I set up PayPal as my cashback payment method on Rakuten.
This might be overkill, but I wanted to minimize the chances of missing out on the cashback. The cashback posted to my account almost 3 hours after purchase.
My CC was charged $501.20cad and I recieved $94.41USD CB, $131.70CAD
Netting the CPU for $369.50
Enjoy your half-price workstation CPU.
