It has been widely considered the gold standard on Android for a while now, even being used by Google, Samsung, and Snapdragon for commercial shoots and was even endorsed by MKBHD himself.

This app NEVER goes on sale and has only gone up in price. If you see the price and think wtf, it’s indeed $40 USD. Historically, the price has only increased as features were added, going from $8, $20, $30, and recently up to $40 USD. They do not do subscriptions, hence the higher upfront cost.

This is not necessarily for casual point-and-shoot users. It is strictly built for mobile videography and and advanced prosumers.

While Blackmagic and Final Cut Camera exist as free alternatives, MotionCam works completely differently in a far more sophisticated method. Instead of relying on OEM’s standard built-in processing pipeline, it bypasses the processing chip (ISP) and exclusively works by grabbing raw sensor data directly and using that for both its Photography and Video pipeline. From there, it processes that stream into its Direct Log mode or full RAW video (actual RAW, not ProRes RAW) of which you’re all in full control

It also has a excellent Photo mode with the same benefits. This approach gives it total control over the camera data instead of being locked in with AI processing or garbage sharpening and Denoising/saturation or whatnot.

Because of how it handles the pipeline, it effectively retrofits older Android and iPhone devices and even modern ones with log and raw capabilities even if not already present. It also provides a means to take images fully devoid of AI, and which processing you decided

It also includes in-app RAW timelapses, a built-in RAW video editor, accurate RAW histograms with clipping indicators, a stacked photo mode similar to Project Indigo, and Direct Preview so the viewfinder shows the exact output without any discrepancy in the final clip or picture.

Beyond the app itself, buying in gives you access to an active community to learn from, and the devs never stop pushing features. What the app is today is going to look completely different in a few years as development keeps moving fast.

There are definitely free options out there, but if you want a cinema-grade app that goes beyond other available options without a monthly fee, grabbing it now is as cheap as it will possibly ever get.

PS: The devs believe one license should cover both platforms rather than making you pay twice. If you already bought it on Android, you can request a complimentary iOS access code for example.
