30% off Makgeolli kits at https://www.seoulhanspoon.com/category/all-products using coupon code “KFEST”. Looks like free shipping over $50 is on too, and they’ve got some bundle deals.
These tend to sell for $15-18 in the Korean grocery stores, so there’s some pretty decent deals if you combine the coupon code and free shipping. I did the 5 Variety pack + 3 variety pack, which came to $74.13 all in, so ~$9.25 per kit for a mix of sweet and classic flavours.
These are brew yourself kits. I’ve tried a few brands, and this one is by far the most convenient. These come in a thick plastic bag that you use to brew in, so you don’t have to use a 4L jar or big pot or anything like that. You just add water up to the line, leave the cap slightly cracked open on your counter for 2 days, and then stick it in the fridge and you’re good to go.
I’ve tried the original, blueberry, strawberry, and pomegranate so far, and all were delicious. The classic was fairly authentic tasting to what you’d find in Korea, and the sweet ones are a decent balance without being overly sweet. I haven’t ventured into any of the mushroom flavours yet.
For anyone that hasn’t tried makgeolli, it’s pretty delicious, but can take some getting used to. It’s got a fermented milk-like taste almost, which can be an initial turnoff, but the flavour is much deeper and more complex. It’s more like drinking beer or wine than soju, and it pairs real well with fried foods. The flavoured ones are probably an easier intro.
Make sure you shake the bag well before pouring, and stir your cup if you don’t drink it all in a few minutes. It settles and leaves sediment quickly.
